Here we show you a picture to explain this: You can see from this image that although there is a 9.38GB unallocated space in the same disk, you cannot use it to extend the system partition C: drive. I've backed up most of my important files from the W7 and W10 partitions in case anything I do does cause an issue. While using Windows built-in Disk Management utility to extend system volume Windows 7, usually you will find the option Extend Volume is greyed out. I also thought about trying to extend the volume with third-party software like ease-us or one of the other partition tools, but I'm a little wary. Is there any reason I should be worried about converting the disk to dynamic to expand the volume and then changing back so I can dual boot? I was about to convert the disk to a dynamic disk as this was recommended online as a way to make it possible to extend the volume, but I decided against it when I saw this message saying I would no longer be able to dual boot.

I have tried extending the Windows 7 volume in Windows 7 and in Windows 10 and the "extend volume" option was greyed out either way. Partition style is "GUID Partition Table (GPT)".Īs I was no longer using Windows 10 as much I shrunk that volume and thought I would be able to extend the Windows 7 volume with the 157 GB of unallocated space. With the TVs power off Windows 7 detects it as soon as the HDMI cable is plugged it. There's potential data loss risk while changing partition size and location, so remember to make a backup and run safe partition software.

The HDD is a 750GB HGST drive (HGST HTS541075A9E680 ATA). Certain options will now be greyed out and the Menu is locked. When Extend Volume greyed out in Windows Server 2019 Disk Management, check your disk partition configuration and find out the exact reason, then follow the corresponding method above. I am trying to expand my main boot volume (Windows 7) with the unallocated space on this HDD however the "extend volume" option is greyed out. I want to expand the volume size in VSphere but the option is greyed out, after doing some research I was able to find out that the 2 snapshots attached to this particular VM are the reason why I can't extend the volume.
